How to act when you're afraid

Let the fear be there, notice what it's predicting, steady your body for a moment, and do the smallest next step.

We often wait for fear to leave before we act. But fear usually leaves after we act, not before. Waiting for it to go keeps it around.

Fear is mostly a prediction: this will go badly. The prediction may even be right sometimes. But a prediction isn't an instruction. You can hear it and still move.

Your body matters here. A few seconds of feeling your feet, straightening your posture, or looking around the room can change how much the fear is running the show. Not because the fear is gone, but because you're more present than it is.

Then make the step small. Brave people aren't doing giant things. They're doing the next small thing while afraid.

  2. 2.Mark it: fact or prediction?
  3. 3.Feel your feet for ten seconds. Let your shoulders drop.
  4. 4.Name the smallest step that moves toward what matters. Do it now.
